I have been looking for an opportunity to get to Sarmisegetusa Regia for some time in the winter. This year, 2019, I was lucky and I managed to be in the area immediately after some massive fall of snow so that all the sanctuaries were covered. Thanks to the Grădiştea Muncelului-Cioclovina Nature Park administration (http://www.gradiste.ro/), all the visitors’ walkways in the site were arranged so that the visit was made in optimal conditions.
Obviously, we did not limit ourselves to visiting the archaeological site and after a brief photo-video session we started on the route that takes us up to the Godeanu Peak. The climb is quite demanding until we get out of the woods, and moreover the heat has softened the snow so that the advancement has become quite difficult.
After about 2h we reach the alpine area below the Grădiştea Muncelului peak where we enjoy a great panorama. The small mining town of Ghelari, Retezatul and Parangul can be seen without difficulty. We continue our walk to Godeanu peak.
To make a circuit return to the car, we make it to the sheepfolds beneath the Grădiştea Muncelului peak, a bit more bypass but we prefer to take advantage of the good weather. A small movie here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw-36_3bnJQ&t=28s
